JHAS Guardianship Program

The JHAS (Jewish Home & Aging Services) Guardianship Program provides legal representation and advocacy services for vulnerable older adults deemed legally incompetent. This Program ensures support for each individual's well being and enriches his or her quality of life, regardless of financial resources.

This program provide direct services, as well as access to appropriate agencies and support services both within and outside of the Jewish community. Client referrals can be made by social agencies, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, regional treatment centers, social workers, attorneys, bank trust officers, families or concerned individuals.

Our professional staff members assess the client's circumstances and eligibility for the program. Since guardianship/conservatorship should always be the last resort, our staff will assist those not appropriate for our program, our staff will assist with fulfilling all legal requirements in order to obtain guardianship of the person and/or conservatorship of the estate.

JHAS provides direct services, as well as access to appropriate agencies and support services, within the community. Professional staff members perform the following tasks:

  • Visit and communicate with clients at least quarterly or more often if needed.

  • Attend conferences with service providers and caregivers.
  • Arrange for services such as case management and pastoral care.
  • Ensure that the client lives in the least restrictive environment possible.
  • Manage the client's property.
  • Apply for and secure any public or private financial and health care benefits for which the client may be eligible.
  • File all necessary court documents.

Volunteers assist in providing hands on volunteer support and are vital to our program. During their monthly visit, these volunteers perform an in-depth assessment of the quality of care, quality of life, environmental conditions, nutritional supports and other pertinent issues. They report to our professional staff assigned to that case. Volunteers and professionals work, together, to advocate for the client.

To further support the JHAS Guardianship Program, professional guidance is provided by the volunteer advisory committee composed of individuals with expertise in different areas related to care and support of the older adults. The members represent such fields as law, social work, medicine, bioethics, psychology, accounting, volunteer development and protective services.
