Jewish Community Chaplaincy Program

The Jewish Community Chaplaincy Program provides pastoral care and religious services to frail Jewish older adults who live in non-Jewish facilities throughout the metropolitan Detroit area. This program brings religious and cultural support, helps an individual to feel connected to the Jewish community and provides Jewish educational training to the community at large.

The Jewish Community Chaplains visit frail Jewish older adults living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities thought the metropolitan Detroit area. Our traveling rabbis provide individual visits, religious services and programs.

If you have a Jewish resident that would like our chaplain to visit your facility please contact us at 248-661-2999.

Volunteers are an essential component of the Jewish Community Chaplaincy Program. Groups, families and individual volunteers, wanting to do a mitzvah, provide important community services through a variety of activities. Opportunities are available for volunteers to visit a frail Jewish, older adult on a regular basis, plan Jewish holiday parties, provided Jewish entertainment and help with prayer services. Bar/Bat Mitzvah students who choose to visit a frail Jewish older adult for their mitzvah project frequently continue to visit their ‘adopted grandparent’ long after their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration.

Volunteers are matched with residents and facilities where they will be comfortable and can have a positive impact.

Parachaplains make a more intense commitment and provide a variety of exciting programs such as: conducting religious services in a care facility on a regular basis, "Thanks for the Memories" – a roving reminiscence program, a Jewish cooking class with traditional Jewish recipes, and leading Passover seders. A Jewish Community Chaplaincy Program Training Parachaplaincy training is held annually for interested volunteers.
